It's a bit old now, printed in 2003 but I'm sure it holds up very well. I can recommend the best book I ever used for learning Chinese. I just try to never read with pinyin unless I'm learning a character, not for sentences, passages, and books. They have a number for new words introduced in the text and pinyin as a footnote but only the first time the character is used.Īlso, I still use pinyin as output (like using an IME, taking notes if I'm not sure the character, reviewing flashcards to verify I can sound out a character, etc). Most of the graded readers work like this, at least the effective ones.

I'm just saying the earlier you can drop pinyin, you end up learning the sounds along with the characters. This is especially true for books that use pinyin underneath the characters, people tend to subconsciously read the pinyin and not the character. It forces you to learn it much faster than if you have your pinyin written out. If you come across a character you are just learning and can't remember the pronunciation you flip back to the new vocabulary section until you remember. You just don't have the pinyin with the character embedded in the text. You still will use it when you come across a new character. I get the impression it's easy to work through the Integrated Chinese books but not get much out of it in the end, while Developing Chinese will make you work hard but with higher rewards. As it is used in schools and colleges a lot, it's easy to find answers and other help online. The Chinese Language school here uses Integrated Chinese, I had a tutor who also teaches classes and she doesn't feel it's very good, but lots of teachers use it because of the amount of teacher resources available for it (slides, quizzes, etc).

It does involve a lot of real self-study as there aren't as many resources online. I like the amount of exercises it has, and by the second elementary book it is almost exclusively characters (only pinyin is for new vocabulary) and by intermediate all explanations and directions are only in Chinese. There are different variations of Developing Chinese, but I've only looked at the Comprehensive Course but they have listening, reading, speaking, and writing courses as well.

I prefer series that drop pinyin early on. I like the Developing Chinese series a lot. I am going to be studying alone most of the time so I don’t know if Integrated Chinese is worth buying (considering the fact that it has group exercises) I have also heard of the Developing Chinese textbook series but I don’t know too much about the contents of the books and whether or not it is a good resource for self-studying Initially, I was thinking of buying either Integrated Chinese or New Practical Chinese reader, but I don’t know which one is better for self-study. I know some native speakers (both friends and family) who have agreed to help me so I’m not completely in the dark here but can anyone please recommend some good textbooks for self-studying Mandarin I am planning to start learning Mandarin this summer (my sister is planning to as well) and I have been trying to find a good textbook for self-study for quite some time.
